Scarcely a year after the events of Cyador's Heirs, Lerial uses his mastery of Order and Chaos, the competing natural forces that shape his world and define the magic that exists within it, to utterly destroy an Afritan military force crossing into Cigoerne. Five years later, Lerial, now an overcaptain and a field commander of Cigoerne's Mirror Lancers, must lead three companies of troops into Afrit on a mission of mutual interest neighboring Heldya is threatening to invade Afrit, and if that nation falls, Cigoerne is certain to be next.

The mission is both delicate and dangerous; Lerial's value in the effort to repel Heldya is undeniable, but his troubled history against Afrit may reopen old wounds that will never truly heal.

Heritage of Cyador Saga of Recluce Book 18 (Audible Audio Edition) L E Modesitt Jr Kirby Heyborne Tantor Audio Books

This is the eighteenth and (currently) last novel in Modesitt's fantasy series, "The Magic of Recluce." A collection of short stories set in the same world was published in January 2017, and a nineteenth novel is due out in October 2017. Why do I mention these details? Because I have devoured all eighteen novels in the past seven and a bit months, and I am very sad that I have run out. Alas, alas, alas.

"Heritage of Cyador" has a military and diplomatic focus, and is the second novel centered on Lerial, the younger son of a duke. I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the first book about Lerial ("Cyador's Heirs"), but still derived great pleasure from it. As indeed I have derived great and guilty pleasure from the whole series. Guilty, because I don't think the books did much to educate or enlighten me. They merely delighted me.

Heritage of Cyador Saga of Recluce Book 18 (Audible Audio Edition) L E Modesitt Jr Kirby Heyborne Tantor Audio Books Reviews

I have read all of the books in this series and this is one of the best. I don't do spoilers so I won't discuss the plot. However, if you like a well constructed fantasy in a consistent setting, then this is for you. The themes of duty, honor and loyalty are in the forefront and set against a background of human frailties, including greed, treachery and disregard for others. That being said, the heroes are not perfect, merely human doing the best that they can in the situations that they find themselves in.
I am a fan of all things L.E. Modesitt Jr. I love all of his books. They always start a bit slower but that's because he writes with such description. You get a logical feel for the storyline. Plus his character development is just awesome. If you are a thoughtful person whom enjoys great stories I would advise reading his books. The series have a familiar feel when reading this author but each series has different elements so while you get the familiar feeling from the author's work you get a great and varying experience with each story. Saga of Recluce is by far my favorite series. Again I would advise reading this Authors work.
It is remarkable that I like an author so much, that essentially writes the same two books again and again. First a true Bildungsroman abut a young male and magic, and then a follow up where the consequences of his actions and non-actions plays out. Always with some gratuitous high power magic.
I guess I would dislike them if I tried to read all of the Recluse saga back to back, but a couple every other year or so is perfect.
I have been reading L.E. Modesitt, Jr. books for longer than I care to remember. I try never to miss one as he turns them out. Perhaps I am more addicted to them, than being a *Fan.* There is just something about his writing that is captivating. Which is very strange where I am concerned, since I hate books about war, or military campaigns, and anything that has to do with hostilities, battles, or fighting. Still, Modesitt's books make all of that more like a fascinating study of power in every-day life. I have never read one of his books that I did not want to hurry back to reading at the next chance I had.
This was the culmination of a very good series. I found it hard to put down and kept reading it last night until 3 o'clock in the morning . This series contains excellent descriptions and battles and use of chaos and order abilities beyond what people normally have , but more than that is his characters perception of political scheming and the role of witchhunters in the amassing of power and goals to direct countries and wars . I found it very pertinent to current events, and I found it uplifting having a better understanding of some things that are going on .
In this book, the second half of Lerial's story is told. He is sent to the neighboring duchy of Afrit to assist them in repelling Heldyn's invasion. Using his order senses and talents he is able to overcome many chaos mages and a much larger invasion force. He also has to deal with a very treacherous merchants guild. I really enjoyed the author's details regarding the use of magic, traditional fighting methods, and general politics.
Not the best Recluse book. It's getting pretty predictable at this point - misunderstood protagonist, has to learn skills/powers (mostly) on his own, eventually gets caught up in a war against overwhelming numbers, etc.

I like the fact that Modesitt continuously shifts the focus of the series - Reculse, Westwind/founding, Dorrin then Cerry (Fairhaven), Fall of Angels, then Cyador, Hamor/Nordla, back to Recluse and Cyador, etc. But the repetition of exile/outcast/lost -> learning -> increasingly desperate battles against ever-increasing hordes, etc. is getting a bit old. Even the love-interests are getting old (order-based, hidden strength leading to unwavering support, etc.)

Each time Modesitt jumps into a new area (from Recluse to Westwind to Fairhaven to Angels/tech to Cyador, etc.), it is fresh and interesting. Then it devolves into yet-another big battle ending. Heritage of Cyador is no different - initially interesting (outcast survivors of Cyador's fall), but eventually the same.
This is the eighteenth and (currently) last novel in Modesitt's fantasy series, "The Magic of Recluce." A collection of short stories set in the same world was published in January 2017, and a nineteenth novel is due out in October 2017. Why do I mention these details?
